Job summary

The Newark Board of Education invites applications for the Laborer 1 position in the Office of Facilities Management Project Control in Newark, NJ. This Civil Service title starts as provisional with a 90-day working test and probationary period for permanent status.

Responsibilities include loading, digging, cleaning, and maintaining outdoor spaces, operating basic maintenance equipment, and recalling records.

Qualifications

• Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license in New Jersey if operating a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties.
• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and applicable endorsements may be required for certain vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Loads, lifts, and moves supplies, furniture, and equipment.
• Digs trenches and grades manually.
• Cleans incinerators, rubbish, refuse, and sewers.
• Maintains outdoor spaces: cleans, cuts grass, trims hedges, sweeps streets, and waters lawns, flowers, and vegetable beds.
• Loads and unloads trucks; shovels snow, gravel, and sand.
• Whitewashes walls, mixes cement and mortar, and places forms for concrete work.
• Performs cold patching, cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines, weed, and clears poisonous vines and undergrowth.
• Operates construction/maintenance equipment, including pneumatic drills, street and road equipment, and asphalt pavement repair tools (e.g., rakes, tampers, heating kettles).
• Assists in repairing and maintaining zoo displays and structures, including routine painting and handling animals as required.
• May learn to operate construction and maintenance machinery and perform routine repairs to valves, fittings, pipes, or equipment.
• Recalls accurate records using electronic or manual recording and information systems.
