Job summary

The California Department of General Services in Sacramento seeks a Chief Engineer I to lead HVAC and building systems, ensure reliable operation, and direct maintenance, repair, and safety compliance across state facilities.

You will supervise staff, coordinate service contracts, monitor warranties and permits, and mentor teams while staying aligned with FMD guidelines and Maximo-based workflows.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience within the last fifteen years in the maintenance and operation of a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning system and related equipment in a large commercial, industrial, or governmental building or institution including one year of experience in supervising such a system.

Responsibilities

• Leading staff in the operation, maintenance and building repairs of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical controls.
• Prioritizing and assigning staff to respond to service requests and/or emergency calls.
• Monitoring service contracts, warranties of all equipment and building permits using MS and/or Maximo.
• Attending job-specific trainings in the handling of hazardous materials or other related topics.
• Maintaining records of evacuated refrigerants using Excel.
• Maintaining services, repairs and/or dispose of state equipment that contains refrigerant.
• Acts as backup in the absence of the Chief Engineer II at any regional facility.
