Job summary

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Atlanta is seeking a Shop Manager to oversee the wood, metal, foundry, and fabrication spaces. You will recruit, train, and lead staff, coordinate schedules, and ensure safe access to tools for students and faculty.

You will develop policies, manage inventory, collaborate with faculty, and support shop operations within the Physical Resources team. Strong leadership and safety compliance are essential.

Qualifications

• At least three years of experience in a related discipline.
• Prior experience in a woodshop or fabrication environment and managing multiple shifts.
• Advanced knowledge and experience in the safe and efficient operation, repair, and maintenance of shop equipment and hand tools.
• Knowledge of OSHA safety protocols.
• Familiarity with wood, metal, foundry, and plastic shop tools, techniques, and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate shop hours and staff schedules with the academic calendar; hire, train staff on customer service, WebCheckout, and equipment care and use; review shop statistics.
• Organize and assign daily work tasks to staff; implement shop policies and procedures; guide students and faculty on projects; speak at student meetings and introductory shop classes.
• Communicate procedure changes with faculty, staff, and students; conduct staff meetings; consult with supervisor on special projects and external requests.
• Develop shop policies and procedures; evaluate space usage and revise for incoming equipment, processes, and student requirements; schedule tours for faculty, staff, VIPs, and students.
• Maintain, repair, and operate shop equipment; report needed repairs and perform preventive maintenance; ensure a clean shop environment.
• Work with supervisor on shop operations and capital budgets; use work order software to coordinate repairs and maintenance requests; assist with operations and budgets.
• Research materials, supplies, and vendors; coordinate deliveries and manage inventory of materials, parts, tools, and consumables.
• Collaborate with faculty to prepare inventory and resources; ensure the sales terminal is updated; maintain inventories to meet academic demands.
• Demonstrate safe operation of shop equipment; ensure compliance with safety policies; coordinate with EHS for OSHA standards.
