Job summary

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is seeking a shop technician to support the School of Film and Acting productions by ensuring a safe, functional shop environment and assisting students with fabrication tasks.

You will help manage inventories, support demonstrations, and collaborate with faculty across SCAD shops while upholding safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Maintain the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the shop equipment and facilities; provide outstanding customer service and help SCAD students from all academic departments achieve their goals.
• Advise and assist students with basic fabrication issues and the proper use of shop equipment, identify potential safety hazards, and ensure adherence to shop policies.
• Maintain tool inventories in the WebCheckout system to track tool distribution and collection, and assist faculty with class demonstrations and equipment setup.
• Complete daily assignments thoroughly and promptly (e.g., cleaning, building projects, machine maintenance, and inventory management).
• Assist the shop manager with training and onboarding new staff and work across all SCAD shops.

Job description

As a shop technician with the SCAD physical resources team, you will play a pivotal role in providing safe, reliable access to industry-standard tools and equipment to enhance the student experience. In collaboration with the School of Film and Acting’s (SFA) production team, you’ll support practicum and work-study students as they implement design elements and stagecraft for all SFA productions.

To support the School of Film and Acting productions, you will:

• Maintain the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the shop equipment and facilities; provide outstanding customer service and help SCAD students from all academic departments achieve their goals; and anticipate and enforce all shop policies, procedures, and safety measures
• Advise and assist students with basic fabrication issues and the proper use of shop equipment, identify potential safety hazards, and ensure adherence to shop policies
• Maintain tool inventories in the WebCheckout system to track tool distribution and collection, and assist faculty with class demonstrations and equipment setup
• Complete daily assignments thoroughly and promptly (e.g., cleaning, building projects, machine maintenance, and inventory management)
• Assist the shop manager with training and onboarding new staff and work across all SCAD shops

As part of the physical resources department, you’ll:

• Assist with loading, unloading, and processing delivered materials and equipment
• Provide the shop manager with the required data (e.g., up-to-date inventories, late-return fines, and headcount data)
• Proactively identify and develop solutions to enhance shop functionality and efficiency
• Attend all shop meetings each quarter and all university-sponsored safety and security training sessions (e.g., hazard communication, ladder safety, biohazard cleanup, first aid, CPR, EPA OSHA training, and more)
• Provide backup support during periods of high demand

Additionally, you’ll:

• Ensure the shop staff maintains a clean, safe, and functional shop environment; report all concerns and repair needs for shop equipment; and perform light maintenance and cleaning of shop equipment and spaces
• Conduct inventory on a quarterly basis and provide inventory data or reports to the shop manager
• Ensure implementation and compliance with all established safety policies and procedures, and demonstrate safe, correct operation of shop equipment
• Provide minor first aid as needed
• Participate in the university’s special projects and events

Minimum qualifications

• High school diploma
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining industrial woodworking equipment, processes, and techniques, including table saws, bandsaws, drill presses, miter saws, and sanders
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office Suite software
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed

Preferred qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in production design or technology
• Experience in scenic carpentry and set construction for film or the performing arts
• Experience in an academic environment
• Experience with 3D modeling or graphics programs

Work hours

The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
