Job summary

Stephen Center in Omaha is seeking a dedicated Shelter Guest Services professional to oversee resident care and safety within the shelter. The role supports clients with daily needs, coordinates with case managers, and maintains accurate records and logs to ensure orderly operations.

The position requires a High School diploma or GED, physical stamina for periodic lifting and movement, and a professional, trauma-informed approach in assisting residents.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, push and pull periodically.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds periodically.
  • Abides by all program procedures, policies, and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all safety and security guidelines are followed.
  • Advocate for clients and assist with medical, dental, transportation, mental health referrals, and other needs.
  • Log client medications and maintain medication logs.
  • Collaborate with case managers to collect data at entry and exit information.
  • Complete intakes for eligible individuals and conduct assessments as needed.
  • Maintain bed availability, client count, and intake numbers; report to leadership.
  • Conduct roll-calls in the evenings and inspect shelter area for order and cleanliness.
  • Answer calls and distribute messages to clients; keep records current.
  • Perform daily shift reports and related duties to support operations.

Stephen Center has served homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha since 1984 with the mission to partner with the community, families and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty. The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing offerings provide safe and secure housing while individuals and families complete an assessment of permanent housing options. All Stephen Center residents have access to dual diagnosis support services via the HERO addiction/recovery program. 100% of Stephen Center shelter supportive housing participants are living in poverty. Housing transition support identifies poverty barriers that may impact one’s ability to achieve or maintain permanent housing through case management, life skills, and behavioral health services. Stephen Center serves approximately 250 people daily in all programs.

Purpose:

The Shelter Guest Services is responsible for the care and oversight ofthe clients residing in the shelter.Staff has the opportunity to direct clients by assisting them withquestions, problems and emergencies.Other duties include maintaining accurate logs, filing out incidentreports and other necessary paperwork.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensureall safety and security guidelines are followed.
  • Advocateon behalf of the clients in addition to addressing the needs of theclients including but not limited to medical and dental appointments, transportation,mental health referrals, job leads, etc.
  • Monitorand maintain appropriate client behavior using shelter rules asguidelines.Initiate appropriateconsequences as necessary
  • Logclient’s medication that includes counting medication upon arrival andmonitoring daily intake.Updatemedication logs
  • Keephallways and rooms clean and orderly.
  • Assist/directclients to follow through with chores
  • Addressclient and community partner inquiries promptly and accurately
  • Answerincoming calls, distribute messages for clients
  • Keepup to date and accurate records of current clients
  • Collaboratewith case managers in collecting data from clients at entry and exitinformation upon departure
  • Accuratelymaintain and monitor ban list
  • Generate incident reports as necessary
  • Clearly and accurately communicate withleadership regarding bed availability, client count and client intakes
  • Contact and coordinate emergencypersonnel when necessary
  • Perform all other related duties asassigned.
  • Conduct Roll-call in the evenings,inspect shelter area for order and cleanliness
  • Complete telephone assessment todetermine client eligibility
  • Complete intakes for eligible individuals
  • Complete UA and alcohol test on currentand potential clients.
  • Complete hourly shift report
  • Participate in cross-training within theHERO Program to support overnight coverage needs and ensure continuity ofoperations, as applicable.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned tosupport program operations, client care, and organizational needs.
