Job summary

Cooley LLP in New York seeks an Associate Director of External Communications for Business to shape and execute strategic external programs that enhance the firm's reputation. You will lead proactive media relations and position Cooley's perspectives at the forefront of business, technology and legal developments shaping the innovation economy.

Working with firm leadership and the communications team, you will guide communications strategy, supervise staff, and advise partners on media strategy,

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years' direct experience in communications/public relations with 4+ years' management experience
• Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Business or related field
• Experience providing strategic leadership and guiding team direction
• Experience leading people, hiring, coaching and performance management
• Strong contacts within national print, broadcast and online media; knowledge of financial markets and business concepts
• Experience with crisis and issues management communications
• Understanding of digital marketing, social media strategies, and content creation best practices

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of in-house and agency communications professionals
• Develop communications strategies with department leadership to support priorities and highlight firm capabilities
• Oversee awards and recognitions program for the department
• Write and edit press releases, pitches, talking points and statements
• Provide crisis communications counsel and media training
• Advise firm leaders on media strategy and reputation management
• Develop messaging, media strategies and communication materials
