Job summary

NC State University Cumberland County Extension seeks an Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development to lead the statewide youth program. You will establish and maintain clubs, school enrichment, summer camps, and after-school programs engaging youth ages 5 to 19, and manage the 4-H Military Program at Fort Bragg.

The role includes supervising staff, coordinating volunteers, pursuing sponsorships and grants, and evaluating outcomes to expand reach across the county.

Qualifications

  • Education requirements include a Bachelor's degree with GPA 2.5 overall (or 3.0 in child or youth development or related field).
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in child or youth development or related field; coursework in a Master’s curriculum with GPA ≥3.0.
  • Experience in grant writing and management; volunteer recruitment and development; program development skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow the 4-H Youth Development program through clubs and camps.
  • Assist the Livestock Agent with the Cumberland County Livestock Show.
  • Seek sponsorships, grants, and other funding sources.
  • Ensure accessibility of programs across the county and develop clubs and school enrichment.

Position Details

Title: Extension Agent, 4‑H Youth Development (Assistant, Associate or Full Agent)

Location: Fayetteville, NC

Department: Cumberland County Extension (NCCE Cumberland)

Type: Full‑Time, Permanent (12 Month recurring)

Position Overview

The 4‑H Agent provides leadership for the overall 4‑H Youth program, planning, implementing, and evaluating initiatives for youth ages 5 to 19. In this role, the agent establishes and maintains 4‑H clubs, school enrichment, summer camps, and after‑school programs that engage youth in positive life‑skill development. The agent also manages the mandated 4‑H Military Program at Fort Bragg and oversees program staff and grants funded through various sources.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage and grow the 4‑H Youth Development program through clubs, after‑school programs, school enrichment programs, summer fun day camps and traditional 4‑H camps.
  • Assist the Livestock Agent with the annual Cumberland County Livestock Show.
  • Seek out sponsorships, grants, and other funding sources to support activities and programs.
  • Ensure the 4‑H program is accessible to youth across the county, developing and maintaining 4‑H clubs, special interest youth programs, and school enrichment programs.
  • Recruit, evaluate, train, and coordinate adult and teen volunteers.
  • Supervise program staff and manage programs funded through grants and fees.
  • Develop and maintain 4‑H clubs, special programs such as Empowering Youth and Families (EYFP), and identify resources to assist in conducting the 4‑H program.
  • Report on impacts of program efforts, evaluating and presenting program outcomes.
  • Participate in community outreach and partnership development to enhance program reach.
Qualifications and Preferences
  • Education: Bachelor's degree with GPA 2.5 overall (or 3.0 in child or youth development or related field). Preferred: Bachelor’s degree and coursework in a Master’s curriculum with GPA ≥3.0 or completed Master’s degree in child or youth development or related field.
  • Experience: Background in digital skills and STEM education to focus on developing those skills in county youth. Experience in grant writing and management preferred. Volunteer recruitment and development experience and program development skills required.
  • Strong work ethic, self‑directed, with skills in leadership, communication, grantsmanship, public relations, planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license and reliable personal transportation (must be obtained within 60 days of hire).
