Job summary

Orangeburg County seeks a skilled Automotive Mechanic to perform repair, service, preventive maintenance, and inspection of gasoline, alternate fuels, and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.

The role operates under general supervision, performing complex repairs, diagnostics of vehicle computer systems, and on-site responses as needed. A valid Driver’s License is required, and substantial experience with heavy equipment is preferred.

Qualifications

• Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
• Requires four (4) years of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance and repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Repair and maintains systems and components of gasoline engines, air conditioning, braking, electrical, suspension, transmission and front end work.
• Service, troubleshoot, and perform routine automotive repairs on engines and related components of electrical, mechanical, and computerized vehicle systems.
• Diagnose and repair malfunctions of vehicle computer components.
• Perform preventive maintenance and test drives.
• Knowledge of repairing bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, rollers, batwing mowers, and other heavy equipment.
• Assist and work with other technicians in performing complex repair problems.
• May respond to road calls after hours and make on-site repairs.
• Fabrication may be required.
• Participates in cleaning and maintaining shop equipment and work areas.
• Performs other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.
