Job summary

ST MARYS COUNTY GOVERNMENT seeks an Equipment Mechanic I to diagnose and repair major malfunctions in cars, trucks and heavy equipment. The role requires performing tune-ups, overhauls, and hydraulic repairs, with training responsibilities for junior mechanics.

The incumbent will operate diagnostic equipment, follow safety regulations, and maintain vehicles in a state of readiness while adhering to county policies. This is a full-time on-site position with competitive salary provisions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Five years’ experience in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and heavy equipment, at journey level, or equivalent training/experience.

Responsibilities

  • Train and instruct Equipment Mechanic I in new or specialized repair techniques.
  • Disassemble and overhaul engines with installation of rings, bearings, valves, pistons, rods, and crankshafts.
  • Perform engine and transmission analysis using computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Conduct tune-ups on cars, buses, and heavy trucks, including spark plugs, wires, and ignition components.
  • Perform general maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment (fluids, filters, lubrication, tires, wipers).
  • Inspect and repair various components (carburetors, starters, axles, brakes, etc.).
  • Change tires and balance wheels; verify alignment.
