Job summary

Wells Lawn Care & Landscaping in Bloomington, IN is seeking an experienced Hardscape Foreman to provide hands-on leadership for a 2–3 person installation crew. The role centers on hardscape construction—retaining walls, paver patios, walkways, drainage, and site prep—with occasional landscape work to round out projects.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional hardscape construction experience (2–5 years preferred).
  • Experience leading or supervising a hardscape or landscape construction crew.
  • Strong hands-on experience constructing retaining walls, paver projects, and other hardscape features.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and lay out projects.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and work alongside a 2–3 person hardscape installation crew.

  • Read and interpret landscape plans, construction drawings, and job specifications.

  • Complete and oversee landscape installation work when included as part of a project.
  • Safely operate landscape construction equipment and tow trailers.
  • Assign daily work, manage production, and keep crew members productive.
  • Demonstrate proper hardscape installation techniques and safety procedures.
  • Monitor quality and communicate solutions to the Project Manager.
  • Communicate with clients regarding progress and site conditions.
  • Maintain documentation and keep jobsites organized and safe.

Applicants should have strong professional experience in hardscape construction, including retaining walls, pavers, grading, excavation, drainage, and site preparation. We are looking for someone who can step into this leadership role with minimal training and successfully lead hardscape projects from day one.

This position is primarily focused on hardscape construction; however, our installation crews also complete landscape installation work such as plantings, sod, seed, grading, drainage, and other landscape improvements as part of our projects.

About the Position

Wells Lawn Care & Landscaping in Bloomington, IN is seeking an experienced and dependable Hardscape Foreman to provide hands‑on leadership by leading, teaching, mentoring, and working alongside a 2–3 person installation crew.

The primary focus of this position is hardscape construction, including retaining walls, paver patios and walkways, steps, flagstone, excavation, grading, drainage, base preparation, and other outdoor construction projects. Some projects will also include landscape installation work.

This is a hands‑on working foreman position. You'll lead by example, develop your crew, manage production, ensure exceptional craftsmanship, and deliver outstanding customer service on every project.

Compensation

Pay: $27.00–$30.00 per hour, depending on hardscape construction experience, years of professional experience, leadership ability, and overall qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately lay out hardscape projects and establish proper grades, elevations, slopes, and drainage.
  • Install and oversee hardscape projects, including:
    • Segmental retaining walls, concrete block walls, natural stone walls, and other retaining wall systems.
    • Paver patios, walkways, steps, borders, and driveways.
    • Flagstone patios, walkways, and stairs.
    • Excavation, base preparation, grading, drainage, compaction, and final installation.
  • Complete and oversee landscape installation work when included as part of a project, including plantings, sod, seed, grading, drainage, mulch, and other landscape improvements.
  • Safely operate skid steers, mini skid steers, mini excavators, trenchers, compactors, saws, and other hardscape and landscape construction equipment.
  • Safely drive company vehicles and tow equipment and material trailers.
  • Assign daily work, manage production, and keep crew members productive throughout the day.
  • Demonstrate proper hardscape installation techniques, work habits, and safety procedures.
  • Monitor quality throughout every phase of each project to ensure work meets company standards.
  • Identify site issues, plan conflicts, and material needs and communicate solutions to the Project Manager.
  • Communicate professionally with clients regarding project progress, scheduling, site conditions, and expectations.
  • Complete daily job documentation, production reports, photos, and employee time tracking.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe jobsites while protecting customer property and company equipment.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional hardscape construction experience (2–5 years preferred).
  • Previous experience leading or supervising a hardscape or landscape construction crew.
  • Strong hands‑on experience constructing retaining walls, paver projects, and other hardscape features.
  • Proven knowledge of excavation, base preparation, compaction, grading, drainage, elevations, slopes, and site layout.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and accurately lay out projects.
  • Ability to identify and correct installation or site issues before they affect the finished project.
  • Experience safely operating landscape construction equipment and towing equipment trailers.
  • Willingness and ability to perform landscape installation work when required as part of a project.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds repeatedly and perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, problem-solving, and time‑management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, professionalism, quality workmanship, and continuous improvement.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must successfully pass a pre‑employment drug screening and background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with natural stone construction and more complex hardscape projects.
  • Experience using LMN software for production tracking, timekeeping, or job management is preferred but not required.
