Job summary

Mercy St. Louis Hospital is seeking an experienced and strategic Executive Director of Surgical Services to provide leadership oversight for surgical operations within our Level I Trauma and Burn Center.

This role ensures high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered services through collaborative leadership, sound operational management, and fiscal accountability. The Executive Director works with physician leaders, nurses, and hospital leadership to drive excellence in performance, quality,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (RN/BSN strongly preferred).
• Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience in perioperative space.
• Master’s degree strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain effective working relationships and open lines of communication with caregivers, physicians, and leadership across departments
• Collaborate with management teams to achieve departmental goals and organizational priorities
• Serve as a resource for ancillary areas utilizing comparable services, equipment, or procedures
• Maintain awareness of professional standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices at local, state, and national levels
• Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures aligned with regulatory standards and departmental workflows
• Establish and oversee inventory management systems for surgical supplies and instrumentation, ensuring appropriate par levels, turnaround times, and communication regarding equipment availability
• Lead human resource functions including interviewing, hiring, and supporting caregiver development
• Meet with vendors to evaluate product lines, recommend alternatives, and support cost-containment initiatives
• Participate in contract negotiations, implementation, and ongoing compliance
• Collaborate closely with surgeons and surgical teams to ensure smooth transitions related to products, equipment, and procedural changes
• Analyze financial and operational reports to support informed business decisions and cost-benefit evaluations
