Job summary

The City of Boca Raton seeks an experienced Recreation Services Director to provide executive leadership and strategic direction for the Recreation Services Department. You will oversee a broad portfolio of programs, facilities, and operations, aligning with city priorities and master plans.

You will lead a diverse team, focus on community wellness, and drive innovation in recreation services. You will collaborate with city leadership, manage budgets, and guide capital improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Administration/Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or closely related field.
• Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in recreation, parks, community services, or a related public-sector environment, including: Five (5) years in a senior management or executive-level role.
• Direct experience directing complex recreation programs, facilities, operations, and services through subordinate managers and supervisors.
• Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget administration, personnel management, policy development, and community engagement.
• Experience developing and managing operating and capital budgets, contracts, partnerships, and service improvement initiatives.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Provides executive leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the Recreation Services Department in alignment with the City's Strategic Plan and Master Plans.
• Serves as the City's principal advisor on recreation facilities, community wellness, and industry trends.
• Leads departmental operations through subordinate managers to ensure effectiveness and customer service.
• Shapes and monitors the Department’s Strategic Plan, long-range initiatives, and service standards.
• Guides planning, delivery, evaluation, and enhancement of recreation services including facilities, libraries, aquatics, and events.
• Directs planning, design, construction, renovation, and lifecycle management of recreation facilities and projects.
• Coordinates capital improvement planning with City departments, consultants, contractors, and agencies.
• Develops collaboration with the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District for planning and funding.
• Evaluates community needs and industry best practices to develop innovative programs and facilities.
• Ensures compliance with laws, regulations, accreditation standards, and City policies.
• Oversees recruitment, coaching, performance management, and development of management staff.
• Shapes organizational development, succession planning, and employee engagement.
• Builds strategic partnerships with educational institutions, nonprofits, and community groups.
• Leads community engagement for recreation planning and service delivery.
• Advises City leadership on budgets, policies, and strategic initiatives.
• Represents the City before community organizations and governmental bodies.
• Provides executive oversight of department communications, branding, and digital engagement.
• Directs use of technology and data analytics to improve operations and decision-making.
• Establishes KPIs and benchmarks for performance and customer satisfaction.
• Directs emergency preparedness and response activities for the department.
