Job summary

The New York City Board of Correction is an independent oversight body regulating and inspecting the City’s correctional facilities. The Executive Director leads operations, policy, investigations, monitoring, external affairs, and regulatory compliance, reporting to the Board and engaging with City Hall and stakeholders to advance reform while preserving independence.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree required; JD or master's in public administration, criminal justice, public policy, or related field preferred.
• Significant executive-level leadership and management experience across complex governmental or public-sector settings.
• Outstanding written, verbal, interpersonal and public communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide visionary and strategic leadership to advance oversight, monitoring, investigations and regulatory priorities.
• Oversee staff across operations, policy, investigations and administrative functions with accountability.
• Build partnerships with government agencies, elected officials and community stakeholders while maintaining independence.
• Serve as the primary spokesperson at hearings, meetings, media engagements and external forums.
• Advise Board on operational, legal and policy matters impacting the City’s correctional system.
• Lead communications and public affairs to strengthen transparency and public trust.
• Manage sensitive matters with sound judgment, discretion and crisis-management capabilities.
• Foster a high-performing culture grounded in accountability and continuous improvement.
• Develop and mentor senior staff and ensure cross-functional collaboration and resilience.
