Job summary

New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is responsible for maintaining safety in correctional facilities and supporting reform efforts to reduce jail populations while protecting public safety. Correction Officers supervise inmates, manage meals, visits, and programs, and ensure security across facilities citywide.

The role includes enforcing procedures, documenting incidents, and coordinating with medical and security staff.

Qualifications

• Residency requirement: must be a resident of the City of New York or Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland or Putnam counties.
• Open to qualified persons with a disability through the 55-a Program.
• May be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs.

Responsibilities

• Maintain security and care, custody, control, and work performance of inmates in NYC correctional facilities.
• Supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational activities, and other groups; conduct searches and inspections.
• Complete forms, reports, logs; communicate with other Correction Officers to exchange information.
