Job summary

Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for an Executive Director of Comprehensive Student Supports to manage and supervise the work of the Office of Behavioral Health and Student Safety at the Virginia Department of Education within the Division of Special Education and Specialized Populations.

The Executive Director of Comprehensive Student Supports would be responsible for the following duties:

• Lead the implementation of an evidence-based framework and implementation infrastructure that unifies all student support functions across the office.
  
• Manage federal and state grant programs that fund student wellness, behavioral health, MTSS implementation, and related initiatives.
  
• Advance school-based mental health services and comprehensive behavioral health supports, including school counseling, school psychology, social work, school health/nursing, and substance abuse prevention, providing the full continuum of care that students need to thrive.
  
• Lead efforts to create safe, positive, and welcoming school environments through school climate initiatives, bullying prevention, threat and suicide risk assessment, restorative practices, and student discipline policy and practice.
  
• Address chronic absenteeism, community schools, and supports for vulnerable student populations by removing the barriers that prevent full participation in school.
  
• Leadership and collaboration within the Division of Special Education and Specialized Populations to support coordinated system of student support within Virginia’s continuous improvement process, ensuring that LEAs identified for comprehensive or targeted support have access to the student-centered resources and strategies needed to improve school performance while being responsive to their data-based needs.

Minimum Qualifications

• Demonstrated organizational leadership skills to unify a multi-function team around a shared vision, while communicating that vision credibly to a wide range of audiences.
  
• Demonstrated experience designing and leading complex, multi-functional student support organizations.
  
• Demonstrated experience overseeing and managing programs in a school division or a non-profit.
  
• Knowledge of student supports with focus on multi-tiered systems of support.
  
• Experience in school counseling, school psychology, or leadership
  
• Experience managing grants that support leadership and positive change.
  
• Experience producing executive briefing documents, high-impact presentations, board items, and formal written materials.

Additional Considerations

• Degree from Institution of Higher Education in an area of educational leadership or expertise; special education, school psychology, school social work, etc.
  
• Advanced/Professional Degree, Credential, or coursework in project management or leadership.
  
• Experience in leadership at the state or local level with a focus on specialized student supports.
  
• Expertise in policy and research.
