Job summary

Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) in Fort Pierce, FL seeks an Executive Director to provide visionary leadership, advance oceanographic research, and strengthen national and international partnerships.

The role oversees research, operations, and finances across HBOI’s 144-acre waterfront campus and 32 facilities, with emphasis on industry engagement, sponsored programs, and workforce development, while fostering collaboration with FAU faculty and external

Qualifications

• Master's degree and 7+ years experience or bachelor's degree and 9+ years experience.
• Doctoral degree preferred in oceanography, marine science, engineering or related field.
• Senior leadership experience in a research-intensive university, institute, or equivalent.
• Ability to obtain a Personnel Security Clearance (PCL).
• Proven track record securing substantial public/private research funding.
• Experience building substantive industry partnerships and sponsored research.

Responsibilities

• Provide the vision and leadership necessary to advance HBOI as a world-class oceanographic research and innovation institute.
• Develop and execute a strategy for industry engagement and collaboration, including attracting companies for research, testing, and technology development.
• Grow sponsored research and diversify HBOI's funding portfolio with emphasis on federal, defense, and industry partners.
• Oversee HBOI's complex 144-acre waterfront campus and 32 facilities, including laboratories and testing spaces.
• Represent HBOI and FAU at national and international conferences and forums.
