Job summary

The City of Sioux Falls is seeking an SFPD Police Evidence Technician to join the Evidence section. You will receive, catalog, store, and transport evidence, maintain chain of custody, and assist with training and court-related activities.

You must obtain CJIS certification within 180 days of hire, hold a valid driver's license, and thrive in a team environment. The role offers a 4 x 10-hour shift pattern (7:00 a.m. – 5:50 p.m.) with no weekend work and supportive benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with clerical or inventory experience preferred.
• CJI S certification within 180 days of hire.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and inventory/record-keeping software.

Responsibilities

• Receive, catalog, and store evidence to prevent contamination or loss.
• Retrieve evidence from remote drop-off sites and deliver to processing.
• Ensure evidence handling complies with laws and SOPs.
• Assist in training on evidence packaging protocols.
• Maintain chain of custody; audits and inventory updates.
• Prepare items for forensic analysis and coordinate transport.
• Manage releases to appropriate persons; answer policy inquiries.
• Maintain supplies for the Crime Lab and coordinate with vendors.
• Respond to inquiries about items held and testify in court if needed.
• Research information on unclaimed items and process notices.
• Maintain fixed asset inventory records and packaging room supplies.
• Prepare monthly intake, release, and destruction reports.
• Dispose of unclaimed items as authorized by law.
• Operate city vehicles, forklifts, and WAVE lift equipment.
• Perform other duties related to evidence handling as needed.
