Job summary

The City of Dodge City, KS is seeking an Evidence Technician to maintain and manage an evidence system, ensuring quality control and secure storage until court needs or disposal to rightful owner.

You will handle intake, documentation, transport, and cooperation with attorneys; maintain logs, support searches or crime scenes, and testify about chain of custody when required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Check in evidence with correct documents and secure storage.
  • Destroy property with proper authorization and notice.
  • Transport evidence to/from Kansas Bureau of Investigation with proper packaging and chain of custody.
  • Provide copies of requested evidence promptly.
  • Ensure equipment is available during searches or crime scenes.
  • Maintain an accurate log of evidence locations and custody.
  • Testify to the chain of custody in court when required.

Job description

The objective of the Evidence Technician is to maintain and manage an adequate system for property and evidence; Ensuring quality and properly maintain the security of the evidence until needed for court or when it has been determined that the property or evidence can be disposed of or released to the rightful owner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following are the performance expectations of the City along with examples of how the expectation relates to the position of an Evidence Technician. This is not an exhausted list of job responsibilities and therefore, other duties may be assigned. Expectation to:

  • Check in evidence and make sure proper documents and documentation are correct; secure all property and place in proper storage location for that item.
  • Destroy property and evidence when correct authorization and statue of limitations have been met; make sure all parties involved have been notified properly and all guidelines have been met.
  • Transporting evidence to and from Kansas Bureau Investigation; Verify all evidence is package properly and maintain chain of command.
  • Ensure that all evidence requested by Attorney’s or other Associations is properly copied or provided in a timely manner.
  • Ensure proper equipment is available when out on Search Warrants or Crime Scenes.
  • Maintain accurate log of where evidence was found and by whom; package correctly and transport to the Police Department.
  • When called upon by the court, testify to the chain of command regarding the evidence.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

Education and/or Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • International Association Property Evidence Certification
  • A valid Kansas Driver’s license
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to cooperate with staff and the public.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to assist Officers or Detectives on Search Warrants.
  • Ability to maintain a professional manner when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply city and state policies and legislation, i.e. city ordinances, procedure manuals, etc.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment – standard office equipment, computer and related software. Two-way radio. Other equipment/apparatus could be required.
