Job summary

The City of South Bend seeks a Forensic Lab Technician to perform diverse crime scene investigations and evidence processing in the SBPD Crime Lab. This civilian role emphasizes meticulous documentation, evidence handling, and collaboration with law enforcement for court-ready reports.

Day shift with on-call duties, 0700–1500, Monday to Friday. Requires a two- or four-year degree in forensic science or related field and ability to testify as needed.

Qualifications

• Requires a two-year or four-year degree in forensic science or related natural/physical science, plus relevant experience or certification.
• Must be able to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to multitask and manage complex crime scene investigations with accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Perform crime scene investigations and processing of physical evidence.
• Locate, document, collect, preserve, and package evidence for laboratory analysis.
• Prepare detailed reports of observations and activities for court.
• Utilize equipment for latent prints, photography, and DNA evidence as required.
• Collaborate with law enforcement agencies and testify in court as needed.
• Attend mandatory CST trainings and maintain proficiency in CST skills.
