City of Missoula’s Missoula Police Department seeks an Evidence Technician to ensure proper documentation and preservation of both physical and digital evidence, supporting investigations and court proceedings. The role involves interacting with technology, databases, and interdepartmental training while maintaining strict chain-of-custody protocols.

The position offers a starting hourly wage of $26.25–$28.85, with full range up to $30.57 per hour and regular increases for longevity and COLA.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience with law enforcement, criminal justice, cataloging inventory and/or data, or another relevant field.
• Must be bondable.
• Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
• Must successfully complete Crime Scene Investigators Training Program within six months of hire.
• CJIN certification within six months of hire.
• Must pass a police background investigation and sign confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Catalog, document, store, and disseminate evidence and related property; assist with digital evidence such as video and audio, and ensure chain of custody.
• Log and document information for received property items; prepare reports, affidavits, and other documents.
• Provide for disposition of evidence per state law when no longer needed; communicate via court orders, letters, calls, and ads.
• Create standard and ad hoc reports for evidence taken or released; conduct inventories; prepare unclaimed property for auction.
• Provide training and updates for changes to computer systems, databases, and software; develop instruction sheets and manuals.
• Assist Crime Scene Technician with securing, photographing, and video recording crime scenes; collect evidentiary items; generate detailed reports.
