Job summary

City of Bloomington Police Department is seeking a Property Control Specialist under the supervision of the Property and Evidence Supervisor. The role handles intake, documentation, storage, security, transfer, and disposition of property and evidence, maintaining chain-of-custody and adhering to laws and departmental procedures.

Responsibilities include operating property management software, conducting inventories, coordinating with officers and agencies, handling hazardous materials safely,

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Three years of customer service experience.
• One year of experience in records management, law enforcement, inventory control, or evidence handling.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to obtain International Association for Property and Evidence (IAPE) certification within one year.

Responsibilities

• Receive, categorize, and store all incoming evidence and property, ensuring proper documentation and secure handling.
• Maintain chain-of-custody integrity at all times.
• Prepare evidence for transport to court, crime laboratories, or other authorized agencies; testify in court as necessary.
• Operate property management software and information systems.
• Conduct routine inventories, reconciliations, inspections, and purges of stored property and evidence.
• Coordinate with officers, detectives, courts, and outside agencies regarding the status or release of evidence.
• Handle biohazards, narcotics, firearms, and other potentially dangerous materials securely.
• Facilitate release, return, destruction and/or disposal of property per procedures.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage areas; respond to inquiries.
• Assist in updating procedures to reflect changes in law, technology, or best practices.
• Monitor supplies and equipment needs; obtain or recommend property and evidence supplies.
• Maintain knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to property/evidence management.
