Job summary

JW Affinity IT in Charlotte, NC is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to design, operate, secure, and troubleshoot the municipal enterprise network infrastructure across multiple sites.

You will manage routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, and cloud connectivity, coordinate with cybersecurity teams, and lead infrastructure improvements while supporting on-call rotations.

Qualifications

• Five to seven years of professional network engineering or administration experience.
• Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, subnetting, routing, switching, firewalls, and wireless networking.
• Hands-on experience with enterprise-grade network technologies from Cisco, Aruba, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper, or comparable manufacturers.
• Bachelor’s degree in IT/CS/Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Configure, administer, monitor, and troubleshoot switches, routers, firewalls, wireless controllers, access points, and related network equipment.
• Support LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, internet, and data-center connectivity across multiple municipal locations.
• Maintain secure connectivity between municipal facilities, cloud environments, remote employees, vendors, and partner organizations.
• Manage routing, switching, VLANs, subnetting, access control lists, QoS, network segmentation, and redundancy.
• Monitor network availability, capacity, latency, utilization, and security events using enterprise monitoring tools.
• Diagnose and resolve complex connectivity, performance, voice, video, and application-delivery issues.
• Support firewall policies, site-to-site VPNs, remote-access VPNs, and network access controls.
• Design and implement network upgrades, equipment replacements, site expansions, and technology refreshes.
• Coordinate with carriers, service providers, vendors, and municipal stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain network diagrams, IP documentation, configuration standards, inventories, and recovery procedures.

JW Affinity IT is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to support the enterprise network infrastructure of a local municipality. This position is responsible for designing, operating, securing, and troubleshooting the wired, wireless, and wide-area networks that connect municipal offices, public facilities, data centers, and cloud services.

The ideal candidate can independently manage complex network environments, lead infrastructure improvements, respond to service disruptions, and coordinate effectively with cybersecurity teams, telecommunications providers, vendors, and municipal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct configuration backups, firmware upgrades, patching, and network-device lifecycle management.
  
• Support network vulnerability remediation and cybersecurity incident-response activities.
  
• Assist with disaster recovery, continuity-of-operations planning, and restoration testing.
  
• Provide technical leadership during network outages and high-priority service incidents.
  
• Participate in scheduled maintenance and an after-hours on-call rotation when required.
  

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Five to seven years of professional network engineering or network administration experience.
  
• Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, subnetting, routing, switching, firewalls, and wireless networking.
  
• Hands-on experience with enterprise-grade network technologies from Cisco, Aruba, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper, or comparable manufacturers.
  
• Experience supporting a distributed, multi-site network environment.
  
• Experience diagnosing complex network availability and performance issues.
  
• Working knowledge of network security, segmentation, access control, and high-availability design.
  
• Ability to create technical diagrams, implementation plans, configuration documentation, and change records.
  
• Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience.
  
• Ability to successfully complete any background screening required for access to municipal systems and facilities.
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting municipal government, public safety, utilities, transportation, education, or another public-sector environment.
  
• Cisco CCNA or CCNP, CompTIA Network+, Fortinet, Aruba, Palo Alto Networks, or comparable certification.
  
• Experience with software-defined networking, network access control, SD-WAN, cloud networking, or zero-trust architectures.
  
• Familiarity with VoIP, video conferencing, fiber infrastructure, and telecommunications circuits.
  
• Knowledge of CJIS, NIST, PCI DSS, or other public-sector compliance requirements.
  
• Experience supporting environments with critical services and 24-hour operational requirements.
