Job summary

NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital on the 11th Floor Medicine unit is seeking a Unit Clerk for part-time evening shifts. The role provides essential communication links within the nursing unit and with other departments.

You will greet arrivals, assist with patient related activities, manage charts, admissions and transfers, and support with supplies and equipment. Strong organizational skills and clear communication are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent, or 2 years of experience.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

Responsibilities

• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Prepares Store Room orders according to unit schedule.
• Receives supplies and checks inventory; puts away supplies.
• Requisitions extra linen as necessary.
• Requisitions emergency or special equipment from Central Supply.
• Returns excess supplies to appropriate department.
• Enters admissions, transfers and discharges on 24 hour report.
• Participates in Quality Improvement activities as directed by NM/ANM.
• Acts as intermediary in provision of patient care and patient/visitor comfort.
• Contacts barber/beautician as requested after primary nurse/designee approval.
• Accepts and delivers mail, packages and flowers for patients.
• Prepares list of patients for religious services; places calls for clergy as requested.
• Monitors patient identification on doors and beds; renewals list daily.
• Arranges patient transportation to and from procedures as per instruction of primary nurse/designee.
• Knows room locations of all patients and nursing care assignments.
• Contacts physicians, technicians and other health care team via telephone.
• Keeps assembly charts; adds chart forms as needed.
• Adds patient reports to charts and sends reports of discharged or transferred patients.
• Maintains chart form storage; discharges/transfers paperwork completed.
• Requisitions, stores and returns old charts; handles charts confidentially.
• Xeroxes or copies charts and materials as necessary; files ICIS reports.
• Initiates transactions for sending specimens to labs; records emergency lab reports.
• Performs clerical duties relating to admission, discharge, transfers and death.
• Initiates issues regarding supply, maintenance and repair of equipment; coordinates with departments.
• Greets and directs all arrivals to the unit; acts as receptionist.
• Assists patients/visitors in locating departments; supports workflow.
• Directs traffic on the unit and monitors visiting hours; reports unauthorized presence.
• Keeps bulletin boards neat; maintains manuals and reference materials.
• Initiates transactions for supplies needed for patient care; orders from Support Services.
• Arranges special procedures and coordinates with departments for patient examinations.
