Job summary

Spokane Public Schools seeks a dedicated custodian to provide cleaning and maintenance for district facilities. The role requires following safety procedures, operating cleaning equipment, and performing basic repairs as needed.

You will work with a small team to ensure a safe, clean environment for students and staff. The job involves evening hours (3:00 PM – 11:30 PM), weekend coverage as needed, and potential supervisory duties for 1–2 site custodial staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Physical ability to lift 50 pounds, stoop, bend, climb ladders, and perform various types of labor in eight-hour shift.
• Proven ability to read, write, and comprehend operational instructions and write applicable reports.
• Available for contact in the event of an emergency, and ability to work after hours as requested.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials and chemicals safety and disposal procedures.
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with scheduling and work order system.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and confidentially with a diverse group of staff and students.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, vacuum and mop floors as needed; move furniture and equipment; dust, wash furniture/fixtures/flooring/windows, clean gutters and drains, operate cleaning equipment, replace lights, and sanitize health areas (bathrooms, locker rooms, drinking fountains, health room).
• Maintenance of sidewalks and blacktop areas including watering, weeding, snow removal and de-icing of hard surfaces.
• Assist with cleaning of boilers and monitor boiler operation.
• May oversee 1-2 site custodial staff, including training and coaching staff in safety procedures and performance.
• Secure buildings and participate in crisis plan procedures.
• Monitor events schedule, coordinate and perform event setup and support.
