Job summary

University of Washington Medical Center's UW Medicine Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology in Renton, WA is seeking a Specimen Processing Supervisor for the Microbiology Lab at Renton Central Lab. The SPS will oversee pre-analytical operations, specimen accessioning and processing, and support culture setup, Gram stains, and molecular diagnostics.

The role requires staff oversight, scheduling, training, and performance management, with a 100% FTE evening PM/night shift.

Qualifications

• Two years of college-level science and one year of experience as a Specimen Processing Technician Lead.
• Or high school graduation with two years of clinical laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee pre-analytical operations with emphasis on microbiology specimen accessioning and workflow.
• Oversee all CLT functions related to specimen handling and processing.
• Maintain and troubleshoot automated microbiology systems (WASP, automated streakers, incubators, imaging).
• Supervise staff, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, evaluations, and performance management.
• Ensure regulatory and accreditation compliance (CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, DOH) and participate in quality improvement.
