Job summary

UVA Health is seeking a Lab Lead Technician, Specimen Management, to guide evening and night shift specimen receiving and processing in the Core Laboratory. This hands-on leadership role balances operational oversight with direct lab work, coaching staff and ensuring accuracy and safety.

You will influence workflow redesign during automation rebuilds, support staff development, and help prepare for future multi-site service models.

Qualifications

• Education: Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT); OR Associate Degree or 60 semester hours with 6 hours in Chemistry and 6 hours in Biology and Accredited MLT Training; OR Bachelor’s in Biology/Chemistry or related science required.
• Licensure/Certification: ASCP certification within 24 months (or military equivalent).
• Experience with front-end specimen receiving, processing, and workflow coordination in a CD/Lab environment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee evening and night shift specimen receiving and processing within the Core Lab.
• Receive, accession, process, centrifuge, aliquot, and route specimens to testing destinations.
• Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and support for laboratory staff.
• Train new team members and reinforce quality and safety practices.
• Monitor work quality and help prevent/correct processing errors.
• Act as key decision-maker for evening shift workflow management.
• Support continuity during major laboratory transformation initiatives.
• Assist with developing and implementing manual workflows during automation transitions.
• Collaborate across shifts to communicate process changes.
