Job summary

AFE Builders is seeking an experienced Estimator / Material Takeoff Specialist to join our growing team in the United States. You will review construction plans, prepare material takeoffs, and develop detailed cost estimates to support bidding and pre-construction activities.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of construction estimating experience.
• Experience with post-frame, pole barn, agricultural, commercial, or residential projects.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications.
• Proficient with Excel, Word, and email/digital tools.
• Experience with estimating software preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review construction drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
• Perform accurate material takeoffs for post-frame structures.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
• Request and evaluate vendor and supplier quotes.
• Collaborate with sales, project management, and field teams to ensure estimate accuracy.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and value engineering solutions.
• Maintain pricing databases and estimating templates.
• Support project handoff meetings after contract award.

Job description

AFE Builders is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Estimator / Material Takeoff Specialist to join our growing team. This individual will be responsible for reviewing construction plans, preparing accurate material takeoffs, developing project cost estimates, and supporting the sales and construction teams throughout the bidding and pre-construction process.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in post-frame, agricultural, residential, or commercial construction and the ability to accurately interpret plans and specifications while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

• Review construction drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
• Perform accurate material takeoffs for horse barns, pole buildings, garages, riding arenas, and other post-frame structures.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
• Request and evaluate vendor and supplier quotes.
• Collaborate with sales, project management, and field teams to ensure estimate accuracy.
• Identify potential cost-saving opportunities and value engineering solutions.
• Maintain current pricing databases and estimating templates.
• Support project handoff meetings after contract award.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and project planning activities.
• Communicate with customers, vendors, and subcontractors as needed during the estimating process.
• Ensure all estimates align with company standards, building codes, and project requirements.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of construction experience required.
• Experience estimating post-frame, pole barn, agricultural, commercial, or residential construction projects preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications.
• Strong understanding of construction materials, methods, and building practices.
• Computer skills required, including proficiency with:
• Microsoft Excel
• Microsoft Word
• Email and digital communication tools
• Construction estimating and takeoff software (preferred)
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with post-frame or horse barn construction.
• Familiarity with supplier pricing and material procurement.
• Knowledge of building codes and permitting requirements.
• Experience working in a fast-paced construction environment.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
• Occasional travel to project sites or supplier locations.
• Ability to review construction plans and documents in both digital and printed formats.
