Job summary

Prince George's County Government in Forestville, MD seeks a skilled Transit Operator to drive passenger vehicles and vans for customers with special needs, ensuring safe, courteous service and adherence to routes and schedules.

Responsibilities include pre/post-trip inspections, radio communications with Dispatch, assisting boarding and with wheelchair patrons, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, and participating as an Essential employee in Snow and Ice Control and other emergencies.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or a G.E.D.
• One year of transit operation experience with direct customer service experience.
• Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger airbrake or mandatory passenger endorsements.
• Must have a current DOT physical certification card.
• An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Operates passenger vehicles in a safe manner, complying with Motor Vehicle and Transit Local, State, and Federal regulations.
• Conducts routine bus and van inspections of assigned vehicle before/after use according to safety and operating procedures.
• Maintains communication by radio with Dispatch and Transit Service Coordinators to report transit vehicle breakdowns, accidents, interruptions in service or other information vital to maintaining efficient transit operations.
• Provides customer service and courteous interactions with passengers by responding to inquiries about schedules, routes, fares, connections to other routes and services, ridership promotions and transit service policies.
• Assists passengers boarding/disembarking when necessary.
• Assists with securing disabled wheelchair patrons.
• Performs daily service/maintenance and maintains the cleanliness of vehicle exterior/interior throughout the shift.
• Participates as an Essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities.
• Performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
