ABOUT US:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Operating in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities, the IRC works to restore safety, dignity, and hope, leading the way from harm to home.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

The ESL Volunteer will serve refugees and members of the local immigrant community by providing guidance and education through English as a second language classes. Volunteers will work closely with the IRC-LA Adult Education Program Supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Lead weekly ESL classes, including English language instruction and facilitation.
2. Availability on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am-12pm PST.
3. Availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-12pm PST.
4. Availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30pm PST.
5. Availability on Fridays from 10am-12pm PST.
6. Use Zoom to teach online, utilizing provided curriculum, PowerPoint presentations, flashcards, and other materials.
7. Coordinate with IRC-LA staff.
8. Respond to students' needs within the scope of the class.
9. Work closely with the Adult Education Team to support students effectively.
10. Knowledge of Spanish and/or Armenian is preferred but not required.
11. BA in English or MA in TESOL is preferred.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Comfortable teaching online via Zoom.
2. Knowledge of using the Remind platform.
3. Availability during the listed weekdays for classes.
4. Ability to adapt to different learning skills and environments, with a passion for education.
5. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
6. Effective team collaboration skills.
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
8. Interest in learning about the IRC mission, philosophy, and global and local efforts.
9. Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
