Opportunity Title: ESL Class Volunteer

Location: Virtual, through Zoom

Start Date: Spring 2025, ASAP

Duration: 4 months, with the opportunity to extend

About the Opportunity:

The ESL Volunteer will serve refugees and members of the local immigrant community by providing guidance and education through English as a Second Language classes. Volunteers will work closely with the IRC-LA Adult Education Program Supervisor.

Responsibilities:
  1. Lead weekly ESL classes, including English language instruction and facilitation.
  2. Availability on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am-12pm PST.
  3. Availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-12pm PST.
  4. Availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30pm PST.
  5. Availability on Fridays from 10am-12pm PST.
  6. Use the provided curriculum, PowerPoint presentations, flashcards, and other materials to teach your class.
  7. Coordinate with IRC-LA staff.
  8. Respond to students' needs within the scope of the class.
  9. Work closely with the Adult Education Team to support your students.
  10. Knowledge of Spanish and/or Armenian is preferred but not required.
  11. BA in English or MA in TESOL preferred.
Requirements:
  • Comfortability teaching online via Zoom.
  • Knowledge of using the Remind platform.
  • Availability during the specified weekdays.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning skills and environments, with a passion for education.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective collaboration in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Engagement with the broader IRC mission, philosophy, and local efforts.
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
