Job summary

PVH Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, WV seeks a patient care assistant to support nursing and medical staff in an emergency setting. Duties include observing patient conditions, transferring and discharging, taking vital signs, preparing patients for exams, and assisting with specimen collection and testing.

You will maintain a safe environment, assist with IVs and drainage devices, and perform EKGs when requested, while communicating effectively with patients and staff.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
• Two years of college in nursing, biology, physical therapy, sports medicine, or related field, or two years’ Emergency Department/pre-hospital experience.
• Current WV EMT/Paramedic or applicable state licensure.
• ACLS certification.
• PALS certification.

Responsibilities

• Observes and reports patient concerns/changes to a registered nurse immediately.
• Assists the Registered Nurse with admission, transfer, discharge and general patient care duties.
• Records vital signs and assists in personal hygiene and patient comfort measures.
• Assists in specimen collection and other activities of assigned patients.
• Maintains a clean, safe environment to prevent infections and protect patients, visitors, and staff.
• Reports equipment repairs promptly according to departmental procedures.
• Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures.
• Communicates nutrition issues to RN when needed.
• Supports department operations with administrative tasks.
• Answers patient call bells and relays messages.
• Performs glucose, urine, and stool tests and maintains quality control logs.
• Performs routine removal of IV catheters.
• Assists with drainage devices and monitors output.
• Ability to perform EKG testing upon request.
• Transport of specimens to the Lab; phlebotomy where credentialed.
