Job summary

The City of Houston is seeking a Warehouse/Inventory Assistant to support the Houston Public Works department’s Water/Wastewater Operations. The role focuses on inventory control, records management, and safe handling of materials and tools.

Reporting location is 4545 Groveway with typical hours Monday–Friday, 7:00am–4:00pm. CDL may be required depending on equipment; valid Texas driver’s license is required. This is a safety-sensitive position with potential drug testing.

Qualifications

• Requires a High School Diploma or GED and basic reading/writing ability.
• Experience with manual labor tasks and basic tool handling.
• Preference given to applicants with veteran status if qualified.

Responsibilities

• Maintains storerooms, warehouses, and storage areas in a clean, orderly, safe, and secure condition.
• Performs periodic physical inventory counts and reconciles counts with inventory records.
• Creates and maintains records and logs of materials received, stored, issued, delivered, or distributed.
• Performs data entry using a purchasing and inventory control system.
• Receives, unloads, unpacks, shelves, distributes, and delivers incoming parts, tools, materials, supplies, equipment, inventory, and related items.
• May assist with moving and loading surplus property.
• Maintains, cleans, and services equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities. Inspect vehicles to ensure required supplies, materials, and equipment are available.
• Observes and follows all safety procedures and precautions when operating equipment and tools at the worksite.
• Ensures the safety and security of materials, supplies, and property.
• May act as a lead for a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Description Of Duties/Essential Functions

Safely and efficiently operates light, medium, and heavy equipment and power tools to perform skilled and manual tasks. Operates forklifts to transport materials, personnel, and supplies as needed. May be cross trained to perform duties in one or more work areas. Inspects and verifies inventory for quality, quantity, accuracy, and suitability against invoices, purchase orders, packing slips, specifications, and other related documentation. Creates and maintains accurate records and logs of materials received, stored, issued, delivered, distributed, or disposed of. Compiles inventory data and prepare reports. Investigates and reports inventory discrepancies and assists in resolving issues. Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position routinely requires stooping, bending, and/or lifting of items of 30 - 80 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a High School Diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized courses or training in the operation of the construction equipment.

Experience Requirements

Six (6) months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment are required.

License Requirements

Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving. May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate.
