The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a skilled Equipment Technician 3 in Lacey, WA. Under the supervision of the Equipment Technician Supervisor in the Olympic Region (OR) TEF organization, this position is responsible for performing journey-level inspection, troubleshoot, diagnoses, service,welding, fabricating, outfitting and making major and minor mechanical repairs on all types of equipment used in highway maintenance. OR TEF provides well-maintained vehicles and equipment to customers who in turn may accomplish their services to the public in a safe, efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner. The primary function of this position is to perform all aspects of Preventative Maintenance (PM) and repair duties on all inventoried equipment within the Olympic Region’s area of responsibility.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Equipment Technician 3 will:

  • Perform repairs on small, large, and heavy equipment used in highway maintenance and engineering.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and make needed repairs to equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair computer-controlled systems.
  • Install and repair WAF (wireless Automate Fueling) system and fabrication and installation of all related parts and components of numerous systems utilized in highway maintenance and engineering.
  • Design, diagnose, repair, and install hydraulic systems.
  • Welds and fabricates truck beds and heavy equipment components
  • Perform machinist, body and glass repair.
  • Paint and perform touch up paint.
  • Operate and road test class A, B, and C vehicles and other equipment utilized in highway maintenance.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic. (Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding may substitute year for year for up to two years of experience, or one year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment, or journey-level standing as a heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship; or by journey-level standing as recognized by a labor union)

AND

  • Three (3) years of experience as a welder, fabricator, or millwright, OR successful completion of technical training at a recognized welding/fabricating apprenticeship program.

AND

  • Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to legally operate vehicles in Washington State; or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Supply basic hand tools.
  • Proficient in operating Windows based computers and software, such as MS Office Suite; virtual meeting software, such as MS Teams; and Cloud computing.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate, or equivalent.
  • Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in the automotive repair industry.
  • Two (2) year degree in Automotive Technology or Diesel Technology.
  • An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in automotive or light/heavy equipment repair.
  • Experience using equipment management systems, such as Fleet Equipment Management System (FEMS) Proficient with Microsoft Office Products, web-based, and mainframe programs.
  • Experience reading and understanding equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Experience operating shop tools such as welders, drill presses, grinders, presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.
