Job description

The City of Bend is currently accepting applications for one (1) regular, full-time Equipment Technician in the Fleet Department. This opportunity is represented by the City of Bend Employee Association and is a FLSA non-exempt (overtime eligible) position.

This position is pending City Council approval of the next biennium budget on June 18, 2025.

Summary

This class performs inspection, maintenance and repairs to City owned trucks and heavy equipment. (Fully experienced level position).

Duties and Responsibilities
The individual in this position is expected to engage in the following work-related activities.

  • Performs inspections and skilled maintenance and repair work on vehicles, light and heavy trucks,equipmentincluding fire trucks; determines appropriate tools, supplies, and equipment required to diagnose, troubleshoot, and implement maintenance and repair activities; fabricates specialized items; welds materials.
  • Drives and operates a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Processes and prioritizes work orders.
  • Cleans and cares for shop tools and facilities.
  • Coordinates and schedules warranty and/or specialty repairs with dealers and external vendors.
  • Prepares and maintains records related to equipment maintenance and repair activities.
  • Identifies and requisitions supplies and materials required to ensure efficient operations.
  • Complies with safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices.
  • Responds to system maintenance and/or service calls outside scheduled work hours while on call or in the event of an emergency.
  • In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, responds as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities, and infrastructure.
  • Performs related duties as necessary to achieve the objectives of the position.
Skill Profile
The individual in this position is expected to possess and exhibit the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, tools, engine analyzers, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment and related systems;
  • Electrical principles;
  • Hydraulic principles;
  • Heavy vehicle, truck, generator and equipment troubleshooting techniques;
  • Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and of mechanical repairof heavy trucks and equipment;
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.

Skill in:

  • Locating, correcting, and implementing adjustments to complex automotive and heavy mechanical equipment;
  • Diagnosing defects in trucks and heavy equipment;
  • Performing preventative maintenance to trucks and heavy equipment;
  • Fabricating specialty items;
  • Welding;
  • Interpreting and carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form;
  • Using and caring oftools and equipment used for automotive and mechanical repair work;
  • Preparing and maintaining records;
  • Using a computer and related software applications;
  • Prioritizing work;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Ability Requirements
The following capabilities are required to perform the essential functions of this position.


  • Positions in this class typically require moving around large pieces of equipment and machinery in order to troubleshoot and repair. The typical successful employee engages in: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, smelling and repetitive motions.
  • Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, and intense noises.

Education, Experience, Certifications and/or Licenses
The following are the qualifications for this position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and one year of specialized training beyond high school in related field;
  • At least four years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair that includes heavy equipment and trucks;
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Licensing Requirements:
    • EVT Certification for those who work on Fire Department vehicles;
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire;
    • Air Conditioning Certification within 6 months of hire;
    • Certifications in Engines, Powertrains, Brakes, Hydraulics, Suspension and Steering, and Electrical Systems;
    • Current and valid Driver's license per City policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
