Job summary

Bobbitt Construction Inc in Midland, TX is seeking a Competent Equipment Spotter to safely position and move heavy equipment in accordance with established safety standards and operational protocols. This role will coordinate between equipment operators and ground personnel to prevent incidents and maintain an efficient workflow.

The spotter will oversee pre-operational inspections, monitor movements for safety, and guide less experienced team members.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and work experience in a construction, industrial, or heavy equipment environment.
• Four or more years of relevant field experience in equipment spotting, rigging operations, and the use of standardized hand signals and radio communication protocols.
• Working knowledge of OSHA safety regulations related to material handling, rigging, and equipment operations.
• Competency designation in spotting or related rigging and equipment discipline, or equivalent documented field experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs and directs spotting activities for heavy equipment and vehicle movements using approved hand signals, radio communications, and established safety procedures.
• Owns the pre-operational inspection process for spotting zones, identifying and mitigating hazards before equipment movement begins.
• Drives compliance with site-specific safety plans, OSHA regulations, and company policies by monitoring all equipment movement activities and intervening immediately when unsafe conditions are observed.
• Develops and communicates spotting plans for complex or high-risk lifts and movements, coordinating with rigging crews, site supervisors, and equipment operators to align on sequencing and hazard controls.
• Leads the documentation of spotting activities, near-miss events, and safety observations, contributing to continuous improvement of site safety practices and operational procedures.
• Provides technical guidance to less experienced spotters and ground personnel, supporting their development in safe equipment handling and communication protocols.
