CITY OF PITTSBURG is seeking a Fleet Technician to inspect, repair and maintain a wide range of equipment for the Public Safety, Bureau of Fire. The role includes diagnosing tools and motors and supporting inventory control and parts deliveries.

Responsibilities include coordinating orders, maintaining supplies and assisting with vendor repairs. A hands-on candidate with experience in small motors and firefighting equipment is preferred.

Salary: $28.35 per hour

Union: This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifying Requirements

Your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will receive notice of your eligibility status via email.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show two (2) years of full-time experience inspecting, repairing and servicing tools, equipment and small motors. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: None required for this position.
  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position, based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above. The Total Qualifying Requirement is two (2) years. (See NOTE under General Application Requirements regarding education/training verification.)

  • Inspects, repairs, services, maintains and performs diagnostic tests on various types of equipment, appliances and tools (e.g., ladders, fire hoses, nozzles, hand lanterns, hand tools, protective clothing, burner blowers, chemical pumps and feeders, mobile and stationary compressors, conveyers, crushers, Cushman Scooters, dust silos, exhaust fans, filter controls, flocculators, generators, meters, mowers, power saws, pumps, pump control valves, small engines including diesel engines, storage silos, industrial tractors, various power machines, water pumps, hydraulic systems, chlorination equipment, small electric motors, pumps, and generators, blowers – walk behind, handheld, tractor attachment, utility vehicles, aerifiers, snow blowers, box scrapers, chain saws, leaf loaders, flail mowers, power pruner, sprayers, spreaders, trailers, line trimmers, litter vacuums etc).
  • Inspects, repairs, troubleshoots and maintains firefighting support equipment (e.g., two-cycle and four-cycle engines used on rescue saws, power rescue tools and other fire support equipment, battery/electric tools and equipment, etc.).
  • Coordinates inventory control, orders materials and ensures adequate supplies are available and delivered; prepares part orders for purchase; fills first responder and house supply orders for all stations.
  • Prepares inventory reports, both manually and by computer, on supplies, materials, maintenance of equipment, and equipment received, stocked and issued.
  • Washes, orders, delivers and evaluates replacement of protective clothing.
  • Delivers equipment requiring adjustment or repair to contracted vendors; delivers all equipment and supplies for special event details.
  • Prepares and assists with unloading material and operates associated equipment.
  • May drive a truck and trailer of less than one ton or drive trucks less than 26,001 pounds.
  • Inspects all mechanical equipment, engines, etc. and replaces appropriate parts.
  • Tests mobile and stationary equipment to assess mechanical problems and to ensure proper repairs.
  • May operate appropriate equipment (i.e. cutting torch, welding/burning/brazing, hoisting cranes, etc.) as requested or required.
  • May be required to work shifts.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned or required.
