Job summary

General Application Requirements:

  • Applicants must submit a complete application including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable) and completed supplemental questions.

  • A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Pennsylvania Driver's License (or out of state equivalent) is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Qualifying Requirements

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show four (4) years of full-time experience as a residential, commercial, or industrial electrician. A City of Pittsburgh Electrical Contractor License is preferred (Registered Electrician). (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is four (4) years.

Position Duties
  • Installs, repairs, maintains and modifies all lighting and power circuits, fixtures, controls, motors, pumps and equipment that is operated from all voltage levels (e.g., signal equipment, pumps, lighting, fire alarms, instrumentation, etc.).
  • Performs electrical inspections for preventive maintenance.
  • Determines type and size wire, conduits, fixtures, boxes, etc., and proper voltage and overload protection necessary.
  • Modifies existing circuits, fittings, etc., to accommodate new and modern fixtures, equipment and controls.
  • Lubricates and maintains electrical motors, switchgear and related equipment.
  • Maintains records and prepares accurate reports as requested or required.
  • May install and maintain solid state circuits to control remote pumps, transmit status and analog data, etc.
  • May drive a City vehicle.
  • Uses a variety of technological hardware (i.e., computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (i.e., email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.
  • Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel as assigned or required.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
  • May work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
