Job summary

City of Pittsburgh seeks a Truck Driver to operate vehicles requiring Commercial Driver’s Licenses as part of a crew, transporting crews and materials. You will perform pre/post trip inspections, maintain logs, and ensure safety standards across shifts.

  • A current, valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (with the "L" air brake restriction lifted) is required at the time of filing application and must be maintained throughout employment. Please attach a copy/clear picture of your CDL to your application.

NOTE

Qualifying Requirements

Your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will receive notice of your eligibility status via email.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The applicant must either A. Be a CURRENT City of Pittsburgh employee with a minimum of six (6) months of continuous employment with the Department of Public Works. OR B. Possess a minimum of two (2) years of paid full-time experience operating trucks that require a Class B CDL. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a high school diploma or Equivalency.
  • EQUIVALENCY: None permitted.
CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will receive a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates receiving job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) before the date of hire.

  • Written: None required for this position.
  • Performance: Required. The performance exam is based on the knowledge/abilities listed in the Job Description, which is linked at the bottom of the Position Duties section of this announcement. The exams will tentatively take place September 22 and September 23, 2026.
  • Medical: Required.
POSITION DUTIES
  • Drives and operates vehicles requiring Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) and all of their associated equipment (GPS, spreader controller, etc.) as a member of the crew.
  • Operates equipment at job site (compressor, generator, snowplow, spreader, pump, multi-purpose truck attachments, etc.);
  • Manually and mechanically loads, secures, and unloads materials and equipment.
  • Drives vehicles and operates equipment in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • May work as a member of a crew to perform all aspects of the work (e.g., corridor cleaning, cutting weeds, pothole patching, emptying litter cans, lot cleaning, etc.)
    • Truck Drivers may exit assigned vehicle and assist the Laborer crew if there is no other driving work available (during loading and unloading of vehicle and between trips). When driving duties become available again, the Truck Driver will return to driving.
  • Performs pre- and post- trip vehicle inspections for mechanical condition and function in both electronic and physical format. Reports and/or schedules any necessary repairs or maintenance; may perform minor repairs.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned vehicles and equipment including: checking fluid levels, lubricating mechanical parts, checking tire pressure, cleaning equipment of debris, etc.
  • Ensures that safety procedures are observed.
  • May be required to direct traffic at work site.
  • Uses a variety of technological hardware (i.e., computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (ie, email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.
  • May work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned or required.
