Job Summary

The Equipment Operator/Laborer performs highway maintenance duties, following detailed instructions to operate various equipment safely, preventing damage or injury.

Relationships

• Works independently or with a crew
• Regular contact with the motoring public, Indiana State Police, and ITR department personnel

Key Responsibilities

• Operate highway maintenance equipment safely and in compliance with safety standards
• Support safety culture by attending trainings and completing compliance tasks
• Perform roadside maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and removing debris
• Assist in winter maintenance activities like snow and ice removal
• Install and maintain signs, guardrails, and fences
• Patching, sealing, and blacktop road surfaces
• Load and unload materials, clean highways, and perform safety and patrol duties
• Maintain equipment and perform other assigned duties

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Ability to operate hand tools and highway maintenance equipment
• Knowledge of traffic laws related to equipment operation
• Valid CDL with air-brake and tanker endorsements
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs routinely, up to 100 lbs occasionally
• 1-2 years of highway equipment experience, snowplow experience preferred

Working Conditions

• Frequent standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing
• Heavy physical effort required
• Minor computer use
• Up to 20% travel required
