Position Overview

The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Solid Waste Division at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange, Florida. The role involves operating heavy equipment essential for daily landfill operations, requiring proficiency in operating machinery such as bulldozers, excavators, front-end loaders, landfill compactors, semi-trucks, and waste separation equipment.

Work Schedule and Compensation

This position follows a schedule of four 10-hour days, which may include Saturdays and holidays. The pay range is $18.77 per hour, with an additional $1.50 per hour incentive for regular and overtime hours worked, not included in the base wage. Overtime and schedule adjustments may be necessary based on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate various heavy machinery including cranes, bulldozers, loaders, graders, and trucks.
• Perform safety inspections and routine maintenance on equipment.
• Participate in laboring activities as needed and assist with operational tasks.
• Respond to emergency situations and adhere to all safety and regulatory guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of 8th grade and three years of experience operating heavy construction equipment.
• Possession of a valid Florida CDL within six months of hire, with maintenance thereafter.
• Valid Florida driver license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Florida CDL Class A.
• At least one year of experience operating landfill equipment and familiarity with solid waste practices.
• Pre-employment skills test required.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work under stress.
• Flexibility to relocate as operational needs dictate.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Ability to lift and handle up to 50 pounds, operate machinery, and work outdoors in various weather conditions, fumes, and dust.
