Performs routine (journey-level) road construction and maintenance work. The work involves the specialized operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment used for road repair, maintenance, and construction programs. Works under general supervision with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Additional Tasks for Higher-Level Operator:
- Grades roads, spreads caliche, and assists in the construction and opening of new roads.
- May clean/clear or build bar ditches according to ground elevations and drainage requirements.
- Examines vehicles for needed repairs and routine maintenance, reporting necessary repairs.
- Operates various gasoline and diesel equipment, including backhoes, front-end loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, and related equipment involved in road projects.
- Prepares daily reports and logs related to materials, equipment, work hours, and project status.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Performs general maintenance and manual labor as required.
- Loads trucks, hauls materials, and unloads at designated sites.
- Sets up traffic control at job sites to ensure safety.
- Reports and repairs malfunctions on equipment.
- May work on reconstruction or rehabilitation of streets, surface maintenance, traffic control, or drainage zones.
- Shreds road right-of-way.
- Assists during emergency situations such as floods, severe weather, or accidents.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- At least 1 year of experience with light, medium, and heavy equipment.
- Ability and knowledge to perform minor repairs and adjustments on equipment.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registration:
- Preferred: Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Must be insurable by the County’s insurance carrier.
- Positions of a safety-sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing per federal regulations.
