Job summary

City of Montgomery, AL is seeking an Equipment Operator I to operate a range of non-CDL equipment and support general maintenance tasks at municipal facilities.

This role involves operating light equipment such as small trucks, tractors, mowers, and a trash compactor; training may be provided for CDL equipment in some locations.

Candidates should be able to read manuals, perform simple arithmetic, and demonstrate safe driving with a valid license.

Qualifications

• Experience as laborer in general trades using hand-tools and maintenance equipment.

• Operates non-CDL equipment such as small trucks, tractors, rollers, riding mowers, and other light equipment on a routine basis.

• Performs minor maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation.
• Operates maintenance equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, tractor implements, and wood chippers in order to perform grounds maintenance.

Job description

The Equipment Operator I classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker position based on the operation of various types of non-CDL equipment on a routine basis.

The skills and knowledge required are of a level and scope to be in support of a journey, trades or crafts person.

Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending on the location, assignment or shift.

Employees in this class operate vehicles that do not require a Commercial Driver’s License such as trucks, farm tractors, zero and turn mowers.

Equipment Operator Is receive training on various pieces of CDL required equipment for future advancement to the Equipment Operator II classification.

• Operates non-CDL equipment such as small trucks, tractors, rollers, riding mowers, and other light equipment on a routine basis.
• Operates trash compactor.
• Performs minor maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation.
• Operates maintenance equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, tractor implements, and wood chippers in order to perform grounds maintenance.

• One (1) year of experience as a laborer assisting in general trades using hand-tools and maintenance equipment.
• Requires skill to read slightly complex material such as operator manuals, perform simple arithmetic, complete slightly complex forms and use tools and equipment.

NOTE

Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Some positions require the use of departmental vehicles on departmental business. Individuals must be capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Some positions may afford the employee the occasional opportunity to operate equipment requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for training purposes.
