JOB DESCRIPTION

Equipment Operator

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work functions to operate motorized light to medium weight equipment to maintain and repair City grounds, sewers, stormwater conveyance systems, streets, and to provide solid waste collection services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Operates equipment in areas such as golf course, solid waste, water/sewer, parks, stormwater, and streets.
2. Adheres to safety procedures; monitors work environment; flags and directs traffic; uses safety gear.
3. Drives or operates various equipment for maintenance and repair of streets, rights of way, and parks; performs driving safely under various conditions.
4. Conducts pre and post-trip inspections; reports problems; maintains related documentation.
5. Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and vehicles.
6. Performs maintenance and landscaping duties such as repairing sidewalks, mowing, cleaning storm drains, patching potholes, sealing cracks, and replacing signs.
7. Assists with special projects and seasonal work, including installing decorations, spreading salt, clearing debris, and removing staging materials.
8. Uses hand tools like shovels, hammers, pick axes, etc.
9. Prepares reports, work orders, logs, and other documentation.
10. Communicates with supervisors, colleagues, and the public to coordinate work and resolve issues.
11. Operates machinery, equipment, tools, including City vehicles.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

• Attends meetings, workshops, and training.
• Assists during natural disasters.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; no experience required but some equipment operation experience is preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

Valid driver’s license required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of equipment operation and customer service principles.
• Skills in logical problem solving, basic math, and building rapport.
• Ability to operate equipment, follow detailed instructions, and exercise judgment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy; involves moving objects up to 20 pounds constantly, 30 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Also requires balancing, crouching, grasping, handling, hearing, lifting, manual dexterity, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, speaking, stooping, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is outdoors, often in adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, rain, fumes, noise, machinery, traffic, or toxic agents. Work involves heavy equipment and machinery that could cause injury.
