Job Description

Position Summary

Under the supervision of Streets Division Crew Supervisors, drives and operates various construction and maintenance equipment to support streets maintenance programs for the City of St. George. This role involves skilled operation of light and heavy equipment and minor routine maintenance.

Essential Functions

• Place signs, barricades, and traffic control devices around work sites.
• Excavate trenches, install shoring, test for hazardous soil conditions, and ensure safety protocols.
• Operate equipment such as sweepers, loaders, backhoes, rollers, vacuum trucks, or dump trucks; perform minor maintenance.
• Use equipment for projects like trenching, hauling, street sweeping, storm drain cleaning, and pesticide application.
• Assist in loading/unloading trucks, laying pipe, pouring concrete, and other physical tasks.
• Maintain records and prepare reports on equipment usage and materials.
• Perform routine or emergency repairs as needed.
• Perform other duties as required.

Physical/Mental Demands & Working Conditions

Requires exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, climbing, balancing, and working in various weather conditions. May involve working unconventional hours, on-call shifts, and responding within 15 minutes during emergencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; at least 1 year of experience in equipment operation and maintenance; valid driver’s license; understanding of motor vehicle laws.

Licenses & Certificates

• Valid driver license; Utah driver license within 60 days of hire.
• Class A CDL with tanker endorsement (Operator I).
• Proficiency in operating specific equipment within 3 months; heavy equipment certification within 6 months; construction signing and flagging certification within 6 months.
• Certifications must be current to maintain employment.

Career Progression

• Equipment Operator II requires additional certifications (hazardous materials, more equipment types, additional licenses).
• Equipment Operator III requires even more certifications and equipment experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of OSHA standards, EPA requirements, concrete/asphalt mixes, basic math.
• Ability to operate multiple types of construction equipment, estimate grades, detect malfunctions, and work in adverse weather.
