A local government agency is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join their team. The role involves operating various types of road construction equipment, performing maintenance and repairs, and ensuring safety compliance. Ideal candidates will have experience with heavy machinery, effective communication skills, and a willingness to work in varying outdoor conditions.
Operate a variety of heavy mobile equipment in transporting materials and/or performing general construction; labor build, clean, repair and maintain Grant County roads, drainage, and flood structures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or logical assignment to the position.
•Operates various forms of light road construction equipment, such as graders, backhoes, frontend loaders, steel rollers, light trucks, water tankers, sweepers, and other related equipment in the construction of roads or the processing and transportation of road construction materials and equipment.
•Constructs roads in accordance with established methods, procedures, and standards and specific project requirements and specifications.
•Performs major and minor road maintenance and repair as instructed, in accordance with specific project requirements.
•Cleans, repairs, and replaces cattle guards and culverts as necessary.
•Completes preventative maintenance on equipment and machinery.
•Rebuild road washouts as necessary.
•Maintain daily reports describing tasks performed
•Required to inspect equipment daily to ensure safe operation and complete daily equipment checklist.
•Assists with snow removal and/or flood control, as needed.
•Remains flexible in working hours as needed to meet deadlines and support organizational needs.
•Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
•Knowledgeable in the operation of and in the practices and procedures used in the construction and maintenance of roads using various pieces of heavy equipment.
•Knowledgeable of safety practices and basic preventive maintenance requirements for heavy equipment.
•Must know occupational hazards, good housekeeping/best management practices, and proper safety precautions.
•While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
•Must be able to maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with the public, coworkers, and subordinates.
•Must be able to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
• Responsible for knowing and abiding by all Road Department and Grant County policies and procedures.
•Must be willing to work after hours and weekends if necessary.
•Ability to determine appropriate course of action in more complex situations.
•Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.
•Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work.
•Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
•Possess good communication and interpersonal abilities.
•Ability to handle difficult situations involving customers, staff, or others in a professional manner.
•Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
•High School diploma or equivalent recognized certificate.
•Must have 2 years’ experience operating heavy equipment.
•Must obtain a Class A CDL within the first year of employment.
•Valid New Mexico State Driver’s License. Must have a good driving record to be insurable for liability purposes.
Physical Demands:
•The work required light to medium physical effort, which includes
1. Frequent bending
2. Frequent reaching
•Work is performed in a work environment of varying environmental conditions, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
•Must be able to move about the work environment and demonstrate extensive physical abilities required for outdoor construction projects.
1. The employee must have the ability to frequently move or re-position up to 50 pounds of materials or objects, occasionally, two hundred (200) pounds utilizing lifting devices
2. Moderate to prolonged walking during site visits
3. Coordinated use of eyes, ears, hands, and feet to operate a motorized vehicle
4. Good Vision and hearing
•Work irregular hours including after hours if needed.
Work Conditions/Description of Tools, Equipment, Work Aids Used, and Materials and/or Products Handled:
•Essential duties are performed outdoors under fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions. Work surface may be wet, dry natural ground or asphalt on smooth and/or rough terrain. Employees may be jolted from side to side and exposed to loud disruptive noises and/or exhaust fumes from equipment or the surrounding environment.
