Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage is seeking an Equipment Serviceman in the Solid Waste Services department to help maintain fleet vehicles and equipment. This role supports safe, reliable operation through preventive maintenance, inspections, lubrication, servicing, and minor repairs.

Qualified applicants have a high school diploma or GED, at least 1 year of relevant experience, and an Alaska Class A CDL with tanker and Hazmat endorsements. Drug screening and background check are required.

This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302.

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Example of Duties

Under supervision, the Equipment Serviceman is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of SWS Disposal fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, and support equipment through preventive maintenance, inspections, lubrication, servicing, and minor repairs. Duties include changing fluids and lubricating equipment, fueling vehicles, maintaining tires, cleaning equipment, assisting mechanics, preparing service records, and other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

• High school diploma, GED, or the equivalent
• one (1) year experience servicing and performing minor repairs on various types of automotive, truck, transit bus, construction, and stationary equipment.

• A valid State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker and Hazmat endorsement, no airbrake or transmission restrictions, and satisfactory driving record at time of hire. Applicants with a restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" and "E-Automatic Transmission Vehicles Only" are not eligible.
• A satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
• Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. Military Service Interview Preference
