Job summary

Municipality of Anchorage is seeking qualified automotive technicians to maintain and repair Public Transportation buses and related equipment. The role covers inspections, diagnostics, and full maintenance across power-train, electronic controls, HVAC, hydraulics, braking, and suspension systems to ensure safe operation.

Applicants must meet high school education requirements and journeyman apprenticeship with 4–5 years of relevant experience, plus CDL-B with Passenger endorsement and clean

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and completion of an approved journeyman mechanic apprenticeship program, and four (4) years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.
  • Alternatively, high school diploma, GED, or equivalent with five (5) years of above experience.
  • Satisfactory background check including criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction at time of hire; if not present at application, obtain within 120 days.

Responsibilities

  • Performs inspections, diagnosis, and troubleshooting to determine cause and solution for a variety of commercial and light-duty vehicles.
  • Conducts complete maintenance and repairs of power-train, electronic controls, heating/ventilation, fare boxes, hydraulics, brakes, suspension, and other systems to maintain safety and reliability.
  • Documents work performed in MOA MMS and coordinates with co-workers to ensure quality and timely service.
  • Responds to service calls in the field in adverse weather to repair or recover vehicles.

Job Information

Open to the general public, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547 members, and any current Municipal Employees.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Applicants shall be referred and considered for this position in the order as follows per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

Internal applicants currently working under the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547 Collective Bargaining Agreement

Local union dispatched applicants

External applicants and other current Municipal employees not covered under this agreement

Example of Duties

Performs inspections, diagnosis, and/or troubleshoots to determine cause and solution required for a variety of commercial and

light-duty vehicles; uses sound judgment to efficiently and safely accomplish complete scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs of the entire power-train, interfaced electronic controls and systems, heating and ventilation systems, fare boxes, hydraulic system, braking, suspension, and major and minor overhauls critical to preserving the safety and/or integrity of Public Transportation Department (PTD) buses and other PTD vehicles and equipment. Ensures the quality and expediency of all work performed; responds to service calls in the field during all types of weather to repair and/or recover vehicles; utilizes MOA Maintenance Management Software (MMS) to document work performed and a wide variety of hand and power tools to accomplish tasks; must establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and others to promote a safe, clean, and harmonious work environment. Cleans and maintains shop work areas. Must maintain regular time and attendance standards. Performs other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and completion of an approved journeyman mechanic apprenticeship program, and four

years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

Must possess and/or obtain:

Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

If you do not have a valid Class B CDL with Passenger endorsement at time of application, you must:

At time of application, have a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

At time of hire, have a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License & State of Alaska Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

Within 120 days of hire, have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction at time of hire. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.

As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
