Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage is seeking a skilled vehicle mechanic for the Public Transportation department. The role involves performing intermediate repairs on diesel buses and support vehicles, including brakes, suspension, electrical, and drive systems.

You will work with Equipment Techs and Lead Techs and document work using maintenance software. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of a journeyman apprenticeship, plus 2–3 years of relevant maintenance

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance/repair experience OR three (3) years of related experience.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - Technicians (IBEW-Tech), Local 1547, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

HOURS OF WORK: Shifts vary; Monday to Sunday

LOCATION: 3701 Dr MLK Jr Avenue

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Performs intermediate repairs, parts replacement, and assists Equipment Techs and Lead Techs with performance of complex repairs on a variety of platforms including diesel bus, heavy‑duty gasoline, and light‑duty support vehicles, as well as conduct independent inspection and repair. Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance deemed critical to preserving the operational and/or safety integrity of the Public Transportation Department buses, support vehicles and equipment. Services brakes, suspension, electrical, and drive system components; Ensures work is thorough and complete with quality and expediency; responds to service calls in the field during all types of weather to diagnose and/or recover vehicles; utilizes maintenance management software to document work accomplished, and a variety of hand and power tools to complete tasks; must provide own standard tools of the trade; must establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, and others to promote a safe, clean, and harmonious work environment. Cleans and maintains shop work areas. Must maintain regular time and attendance standards. Performs other duties assigned.

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and three (3) years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

AND

Must possess the following:

• At time of application - Valid Driver's License
• At time of hire - Valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible

• At time of application - Valid Driver's License
• At time of hire - Valid State of Alaska Driver's License & State of Alaska Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)
• Within 120 days – must obtain a valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's State of Alaska driver's license & State of Alaska Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) or State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction; and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected for the position will be required to take a preemployment drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

Military Service Interview Preference: Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
