Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage's Solid Waste Services department is seeking an Equipment Serviceman to ensure safe, reliable operation of disposal fleet and heavy equipment. Under supervision, you will perform preventive maintenance, inspections, fluid changes, lubrication, and minor repairs, with duties including fueling, tire maintenance, and record keeping.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of hands-on maintenance experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Minimum one year of experience servicing and performing minor repairs on automotive equipment, trucks, transit buses, or similar machinery.
• Valid State of Alaska Class A CDL with tanker and Hazmat endorsements; no airbrake or transmission restrictions.
• Satisfactory drug screening and background check at time of hire.
• Driving history review per MOA Driving Conviction Guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment including fluids, lubrication, and inspections.
• Fuel vehicles, maintain tires, and clean equipment.
• Assist mechanics and prepare service records.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Work four 10-hour shifts; days TBD.

This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302.

DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste Services (SWS)

HOURS OF WORK: Four 10s, days TBD

LOCATION: ARL - 15500 E. Eagle River Loop Rd, Eagle River

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Under supervision, the Equipment Serviceman is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of SWS Disposal fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, and support equipment through preventive maintenance, inspections, lubrication, servicing, and minor repairs. Duties include changing fluids and lubricating equipment, fueling vehicles, maintaining tires, cleaning equipment, assisting mechanics, preparing service records, and other related duties as assigned.

High school diploma, GED, or the equivalent and one (1) year experience servicing and performing minor repairs on various types of automotive, truck, transit bus, construction, and stationary equipment.

All applicants must possess and/or obtain:

• A valid State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker and Hazmat endorsement, no airbrake or transmission restrictions, and satisfactory driving record at time of hire. Applicants with a restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" and “E-Automatic Transmission Vehicles Only” are not eligible.
• A satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
• Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory drug screen prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

As a condition of employment, the candidate selected must provide their Union Dispatch Referral Form by the time of hire.

Military Service Interview Preference
