Job Title: Equipment Mechanic

Department: Leisure Services at Rockledge Golf Course

Reports To: Golf Course Superintendent or his designee

FLSA: $33.04 to $36.40 per hour*

*Subject to increase with contract ratification

Job Purpose

Responsible for the diagnostic, maintenance, and repair of department equipment including the automatic irrigation system, ice surfaces, pool pumps, mowers, small tractors, small water pumps, leaf blowers, leaf pickers, and other equipment operated by employees of the division.

Work Environment

Work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions and repetitive movements against resistance with the upper extremities for prolonged periods in the operation of hand tools and other equipment. Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds and operate equipment for an extended period of time. Exposure to dirt, noise, fumes and other disagreeable conditions. Work may include extended work periods in excess of eight hours and being called in to respond to public safety emergencies. May work outdoors for prolonged periods, exposed to varying weather conditions and/or temperature extremes.

Essential Job Functions

• Performs a wide variety of skilled tasks using hand tools and machine operations in maintaining and repairing grounds maintenance equipment.
• Tests equipment, diagnoses mechanical problems, disassembles motors, repairs or replaces broken or worn parts and reassembles equipment.
• Overhauls motors, grinds valves, replaces worn gears, shafts and bearings in transmissions; repairs clutches, brakes and ignition systems, adjusts points, condensers, coils and wiring; rebuilds steering systems.
• Replaces hoses and other parts of hydraulic systems. Machines simple metal parts.
• Plans, schedules, and administers preventative maintenance program for equipment.
• Assists in ordering special parts, and maintains stock of high wear items.
• Maintains shop equipment.
• Collects associated work records through manual and automated systems. Completes and submits required reports and paperwork.
• Researches and recommends budget for equipment parts and supplies.
• Assists in supervising personnel in the absence of the supervisor.
• Assists in training new employees in operating grounds equipment and in performing mechanical maintenance and repair.
• Performs job duties in the work environment as described above.

Additional Job Functions:

• Performs general seasonal maintenance and repair work on grounds and facilities including plowing and shoveling snow in and around Town parks, grounds, and parkways.
• Operates a truck, other automotive equipment, and miscellaneous tools and equipment.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and practices related to the maintenance and mechanical repair of grounds equipment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in operating department equipment.
• Knowledge and skill in hydraulics and welding techniques.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Ability to meet the public in a pleasant and courteous manner.
• Ability and willingness to work under severely adverse conditions of weather, temperature, dirt and noise.
• Ability to operate, maintain, and service power equipment.
• Willingness and ability to work under conditions of considerable personal hazard arising from the nature of tools and equipment used and type of physical activity required.
• Sufficient strength and physical agility to lift and move heavy objects and otherwise perform heavy physical labor.
• Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
• Ability to train others in the use and repair of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate supplemented with trade school courses in automotive or mechanical repairs. Two (2) years experience in mechanical repairs to equipment or automotive mechanics. A valid driving record in accordance with Town of West Hartford Driving Policy.
